Mabryn & Matt’s Destination Wedding: Charleston to York at The Grand Hotel

When Mabryn and Matt decided to celebrate their wedding at The Grand Hotel in York, England, after travelling all the way from Charleston, South Carolina, I couldn’t have been more excited. Their wedding journey started with an inquiry via Instagram, which immediately caught my attention. When we met for their engagement shoot in York City Centre, I knew this would be a special day.

We explored iconic spots like The Museum Gardens and a cozy local pub, capturing the relaxed vibes that Mabryn and Matt wanted for their engagement session. The ease with which we connected made it clear that we were going to have an incredible time on the wedding day — they already felt like friends.

Wedding Rehearsal at The Grand Hotel York

The night before the wedding, I had the privilege of attending their rehearsal dinner at The Grand Hotel, photographing candid moments and heartfelt speeches. This gave me a deeper connection with the couple and their families, making it easier to blend in seamlessly on their wedding day. With Matt’s family from England and many of Mabryn’s loved ones from America, there were plenty of laughs and light-hearted moments about the use of Yorkshire slang — and Matt’s father’s dictionary became a comedic highlight!

A Dream Wedding Day at The Grand Hotel

The wedding day itself brought a variety of weather challenges — but as any wedding photographer will tell you, this can lead to some truly creative shots. The morning began with an intimate first look on The Grand Hotel’s elegant staircase, followed by portraits outside by York City Walls. A sudden rain shower moved the group inside for some beautiful shots in the Boardroom, but we were fortunate enough to catch some stunning moments by the river when the sun finally made an appearance.

Some of my absolute favorite photos from the day were taken during this golden hour, where the sunlight filtered through the trees, casting a magical glow on Mabryn’s House of Renhue dress and the stunning cape she wore.

Bridal Beauty and Stunning Styling

Mabryn’s hair and makeup were fresh, timeless, and utterly stunning, thanks to Hannah Dora Makeup and Paige Lauren Hair. Her bridal party wore a mix of colors, prints, and styles that perfectly reflected their individuality, yet worked harmoniously together. Meanwhile, Matt and his groomsmen donned traditional morning suits, epitomizing elegance and class.

The ceremony itself took place in the Boardroom, a space adorned with the most beautiful floral arrangements by Walter & Blossom, led by the talented Sophie. The mood was elevated by the Yorkshire String Quartet, whose music set the tone for a deeply emotional ceremony. I must admit, I shed a tear or two during the couple’s vows.

After the ceremony, guests were greeted by long candle-lit tables, expertly styled by Ambience Styling. The beautifully lit room, with its pastel décor, made a subtle nod to Charleston, where Mabryn and Matt’s love story began. I couldn’t help but admire how the creative details, from hand-drawn invitations to wax seals, reflected the couple’s unique blend of Southern charm and Yorkshire elegance.

The Perfect Bridal Look: Two Stunning Dresses

One of the most memorable moments came later in the day when Mabryn surprised everyone with a second bridal look. She removed her floaty cape and added a halter neck to her gown, revealing a more form-fitting design perfect for dancing the night away at the evening reception. The change was nothing short of stunning and allowed her to enjoy the party to the fullest — which they certainly did, taking full advantage of the gorgeous evening light that poured in through the Boardroom windows.

Wedding Photography Highlights: A Perfect Day in York

Despite the unpredictable weather, Mabryn and Matt’s wedding at The Grand Hotel York was nothing short of magical. From the first look to the emotional vows and the golden hour portraits by the river, the day was a beautiful celebration of love, creativity, and family. It was a privilege to be part of their destination wedding, capturing moments that will last a lifetime.
